Debunking the myth: does knuckle-cracking really cause arthritis?

Is Cracking Your Knuckles Bad for You?

Answered by Dr Itender Pal Singh

I hear this question often, usually from someone whose parent warned them it would cause arthritis. My honest answer: no, cracking your knuckles does not cause arthritis, and the research backs this up clearly.

That popping sound comes from gas bubbles forming and collapsing in the fluid that lubricates your joints — not from bone damage.

That said, a couple of caveats:

  • If cracking your knuckles is accompanied by pain or swelling, that’s not normal and is worth getting checked out
  • Some studies suggest habitual, forceful knuckle-cracking over decades might slightly reduce grip strength, though the evidence here is limited

My advice: If it’s just the sound and it doesn’t hurt, crack away — it’s a harmless habit, not a medical risk.
