Is It Bad to Exercise on an Empty Stomach?

Answered by Dr Itender Pal Singh

This comes up a lot with patients who do morning workouts. My honest answer: for most healthy people, exercising on an empty stomach — often called “fasted exercise” — is not harmful, and some people even prefer how it feels.

Some research suggests fasted exercise may increase fat burning during the workout, though the long-term difference in weight loss compared to eating beforehand appears to be minimal.

Who should be more careful:

  • People with diabetes or blood sugar regulation issues
  • Anyone doing high-intensity or long-duration workouts, where low energy can cause dizziness or poor performance
  • Those who tend to feel lightheaded or nauseous without eating first

My advice: Listen to your body. If fasted workouts feel fine and you perform well, there’s no need to force a pre-workout snack. If you feel weak, shaky, or dizzy, eat something light beforehand.
