Patients ask me this constantly, usually while apologizing for only getting six hours. Here’s my honest take: most healthy adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night. That’s not a guess — it’s backed by decades of sleep research.
Consistently sleeping less than 7 hours is linked to a higher risk of heart disease, weakened immunity, weight gain, and impaired memory and focus.
But more isn’t automatically better, either. Regularly sleeping more than 9 hours has also been associated with certain health issues, though in many cases that’s a sign of an underlying problem rather than the cause.
My advice: Don’t just chase a number. Aim for 7-9 hours, but also pay attention to how you feel during the day. If you’re getting 7 hours and still exhausted, that’s worth investigating — the quality of your sleep matters as much as the quantity.
