In my practice, this is one of the questions I get asked most often “Is 3 Cups of Coffee a Day Too Much?”. My honest answer: for most people, three cups of coffee a day is not too much — as long as it isn’t making you jittery or interfering with sleep.
In fact, the research on coffee has surprised me over the years. Studies consistently link coffee drinking to a lower risk of stroke, kidney stones, liver cirrhosis, and type 2 diabetes. Coffee drinkers also tend to have lower death rates overall, though I suspect that has more to do with other habits coffee drinkers share than the coffee itself.
That said, there are downsides worth knowing:
- It can raise blood pressure — teenagers seem especially sensitive to this effect
- It can reduce how well your body absorbs iron and calcium. This isn’t from the caffeine, but from a compound called phenolic acid — so even decaf has this effect. You’d need to drink quite a bit for it to meaningfully affect your mineral levels, though
- Depending on how it’s brewed, coffee can modestly raise cholesterol. Boiled or French-press coffee lets “coffee oil” into your cup, which can raise cholesterol; filtered coffee (the most common method in the U.S.) does not have this effect
My advice to patients is simple: If even one cup makes you jittery, anxious, or keeps you up at night, that’s one cup too many for you. I won’t pretend to know if 10 cups a day is safe — I wouldn’t drink that much myself. Three cups is my personal limit, and it’s a reasonable one for most healthy adults.
