This is a fair question, and the answer is: yes, but usually only temporarily and modestly.
Caffeine can cause a short-term spike in blood pressure — sometimes noticeable within 30 minutes of drinking a cup. In people who don’t drink coffee regularly, this effect tends to be stronger. Regular coffee drinkers often build up a tolerance, so the effect fades with habitual use.
Who should be more cautious:
- Teenagers and younger adults, who seem more sensitive to caffeine’s blood pressure effects
- People with already-elevated or poorly controlled blood pressure
- Anyone who notices symptoms like a racing heart or headache after coffee
My advice: If your blood pressure is well-controlled and you don’t notice symptoms, moderate coffee intake (2-3 cups) is generally fine. If you have hypertension, it’s worth monitoring your blood pressure around your coffee habit and discussing it with your doctor.
